The new campus of Vienna University of Economics and Business (Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, WU Vienna) is a project second to none. The electronic access control for about 4,500 access points across the campus with heavy integration of other systems was delivered by ESSECCA GmbH, the exclusive distributor of SALTO Systems in Austria.

The main task for ESSECCA was to design and implement an automated and secure use of premises and rooms for about 64,000 people with different and changing access rights. The centerpiece of the solution is a specifically developed interface for an external database, with which all personal data and access rights are transferred into the access control system automatically and in real-time during registration.

There are about 2,500 off-line access points equipped with XS4 electronic locks by SALTO Systems. A further 500 on-line access points with XS4 electronic wireless locks and 80 gateways are also installed. ESSECCA developed the interface for automation of the access control, supplied all door components (electronic and mechanical locks, panic bars, electronic and mechanical escutcheons), integrated widely varying controllers and co-ordinated with about 200 individual trades.

The €492 million project includes 6 new building complexes, each consisting of several buildings. The Library & Learning Center, designed by international award winning architect Zaha Hadid, is the signature building of the Campus. In all, there were 6 renowned architects from Austria, Germany, Japan, UK, and Spain involved.
